Recent research into women’s participation in golf in Canada reveals several key findings:

Underrepresentation:

Women currently make up only about 25% of Canadian golfers. Despite this, there is a growing interest among women in taking up the sport.

Barriers to Entry:

Many women express uncertainty about how to start and where to find a welcoming golfing community. Without a partner or friend who golfs, it can be very intimidating to find out how to get started.

Social & Health Motivations:

Studies indicate that approximately 75% of female golfers are noncompetitive. They are primarily motivated by the desire to socialize, improve their health, and enjoy the recreational aspects of the game rather than intense competition.

Desire for Inclusive Environments:

There is a strong call for golf experiences that are flexible and inclusive—where women can learn at their own pace, enjoy themed and fun formats, and build supportive networks.

Impact of Supportive Initiatives:

Programs like Women’s Adventures in Golf (WAG) are emerging to fill a critical gap by providing a relaxed, community-focused alternative that encourages participation across all skill levels while promoting charity and community engagement. Many of the golf clubs that partner with WAG also offer dedicated ladies leagues, which further reduce barriers for women in golf. These initiatives not only create welcoming environments for women to enjoy the game but also foster connections, support local causes, and empower women to take part in a sport that has traditionally been underrepresented by female participants.
