WAG Overview & Purpose

  • Why start Women’s Adventures in Golf?
The data is out! More women are wanting to golf but are unsure where to start & how to get involved. Since only 25% of Canadian golfers are women, it’s difficult to find others to join unless you’re a club member. Women’s Adventures in Golf (W.A.G.) is the perfect opportunity for women in the community to come together & just have fun playing golf in a unique format. Games are created with every type of golfer in mind.

  • What is the W.A.G. game? Is it a tournament? Is it a league?
WAG is not a league, and its events are NOT tournaments. A WAG event is simply a relaxed round of golf (prizes and a meal are not included). Sign up for the event(s) in which you would like to participate. Based on a theme, each game will offer something different with a sprinkle of golf added in. Work as a group to achieve fun objectives by hitting the preferred shot (4-person scramble format). Whether you’re just starting or are an experienced golfer looking to socialize, this format is designed for you. And you don’t even need to keep score—it's completely up to you!

  • How can I be the architect of my own experience?
Each theme is based on 18 holes, but you can choose to finish prior to the full round. Once you get started, you might decide to play all 18 holes, though you have the flexibility to finish early. You also have the choice to stay afterwards for a meal, designate an amount for the partnered charity, choose to walk or cart, register as a single or with a group, and decide whether or not to keep score for “Braggin’ Rights”. WAG is all about providing options to suit your schedule and preferences.

Registration & Participation

  • I’m new to golf. Is this for me?
Absolutely! We’ve all been there, and WAG is designed to be supportive of the learning process. The game features a maximum score on each hole, so if you’re new, you’ll simply “pick up” once that limit is reached. You’ll appreciate the Scramble format, where everyone plays from the best shot—making it fun and non-intimidating.

  • Do we need to have a partner?
No, you don’t. You can sign up as a single, twosome, or foursome (or even more!). If you’re registering as a single, contact us directly and share a bit about yourself. We’ll match you with another golfer with similar goals. If you’d like to play with the same grouping every round, just let us know.

  • Is there a deadline?
Yes. Our host clubs require a two-week advance notice to accommodate our group size. If you miss the deadline, please contact us and we can add you to the waiting list.

  • What is a shotgun start?
In a shotgun start, each foursome is assigned to a specific hole to begin their round simultaneously. For example, if your group starts on hole #6, you will continue through the course and finish at the hole prior to your starting hole (in this case, hole #5). We aim to fill the entire course with women, so this format helps everyone start together.

Costs, Fees & Donations

  • What’s the cost & who do I pay?
WAG is a not-for-profit event. Your payment is directed to the host club to cover their greens fees, which will vary by club. If you choose to stay for a meal, select from the club’s options and pay in advance with your greens fee. This also helps the club organize the event more smoothly.

  • But I’m a member at the hosting club. Do I pay the same fee?
No. If you’re a full member at the hosting club, your round is free or you may pay a discounted weekend rate offered by the club.

  • It’s not a tournament & I’m only paying the club’s regular rate. What’s the catch?
There’s no catch. WAG is all about women supporting each other and giving back to the community. Each event includes an optional donation component where you can receive an in-game advantage if you donate to the local charity specified for that event. Donate what you’re comfortable with—a collection of small contributions makes a big difference!

  • Donations can be made online (with your receipt shown to organizers) or by cheque (with a sealed envelope and your contact details if you require a receipt). VISIT THE CHARITIES PAGE  for more information about our charitable partners and links to donate

Event Format, Rules & Customization

  • How specifically does the theme component work?
Each round incorporates a theme into the golf game with fun objectives and small incentives. Some games award ‘funny money’ credit, and there may be challenges that let your group use that credit to get out of tough situations. In some cases, incentives are given to the group with the most ‘funny money’ remaining, or for reaching a threshold goal that enters your name into a draw for a small prize. Some events also feature trivia components related to the theme. If you’re confused, don’t worry—you’ll receive a booklet upon arrival that explains everything.

  • Is there a ‘Dress Code’? Can we dress according to the theme?
Yes! While standard golf attire is expected (soft-spike golf shoes and appropriate clothing per the golf course’s dress code), we encourage you to dress according to the theme for extra fun. Some women even decorate their carts to match the theme!

  • Should I book a cart?
This is a personal choice. While some players prefer to use a pushcart, certain courses with significant elevation changes might make a cart a preferable option. Please consider your comfort and the course layout when making your decision.

  • ‘Pace of Play’ - What is this?
‘Pace of Play’ refers to keeping the round moving efficiently and ensuring you’re keeping up with the group ahead. Follow the tips on the WAG mini rules card to help maintain a good pace. We also implement a maximum score per hole to accommodate all skill levels, which helps keep the game fun and moving along.

Skill Level, Handicap & Equipment

  • Do I need a handicap?
No, you don’t need a handicap to participate in WAG events. Our rounds are designed for every type of golfer, regardless of experience or skill level.

  • What’s a handicap?
A handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer’s potential ability, used to level the playing field in tournaments. While it isn’t required for WAG, it can be useful if you decide to participate in competitive play in the future.

  • Should I keep a handicap & how do I do this?
For WAG, maintaining a handicap is optional. However, if you’re interested in eventually participating in competitive women’s tournaments, keeping a handicap might be beneficial. To establish a handicap, contact Golf Canada; they will set up an account for you (for a fee). Be sure to record your scores using their app and submit them within 24 hours, as weather conditions (like wind) can affect your score.

  • What do I do if I don’t have equipment?
If you don’t have your own equipment, check with the host club ahead of time to see if they offer rentals. Please note that equipment availability may be limited.

Logistics & On-the-Day Details

  • When do I arrive and what do I do?
Plan to arrive at least 40 minutes early. This extra time will allow you to get oriented, practice, and register your donation. On arrival, you’ll be greeted and guided through the following steps:

    • Meet your group

    • Head to the registration table to receive the theme booklet

    • Submit any donations or proof of online donation

    • Be directed to the practice facility and first tee

    • Ask any questions you might have about the game

  • Is there a meal included?
Meals are not included in your greens fee. With a shotgun start event, participants typically gather after the round at the clubhouse or on a patio/deck for a bite to eat—a great opportunity to socialize and exchange contact information. For example, at Katchiwano Golf Club, a reservation is made after the round at Cheeky Duck Vineyard (located 160 metres north of the club).

  • What about snacks/meals?
It’s always a good idea to stay hydrated—bring plenty of water and a protein snack. Many clubs also offer snack items for purchase. If you’d like to have a meal after your round, simply indicate your choice when registering. Note that dinner is not included in your golf fee.
